The River Corridor

River Corridor Main Street Program

Among the most acute needs identified in the Charrette was continued focus on the County’s “Main Streets”—both to enhance quality-of-life and to capture tourism dollars. In 2010, the Division of Planning secured a $500,000 grant from the New York Main Street Program to renovate buildings within targeted “Main Street” blocks of Callicoon, Narrowsburg and Barryville; a portion of the grant will also fund streetscape enhancements. Planning is seeking other grants for infrastructure improvements within the target areas of these hamlets.

Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP)

County Planning received a grant from New York State’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) to support vision plans and demonstration projects around increased access to the river, historic preservation and downtown revitalization. The LWRP process is intended to rank funding priorities and to coordinate strategies that promote the region as a whole.

Route 97 Scenic Byway & Ft. Delaware Visitors’ Center

The Scenic Byway has been busy with two new projects in 2010: first, a study of “viewsheds” and selective cutting of vegetation to enhance vistas along the river; and second, collaborating with the County to commission a feasibility-design study for a new visitors’ center at the Fort Delaware historic site, located at Kirks Road in Narrowsburg. A year-round facility at Fort Delaware will allow educational programming to extend into the winter season and will orient visitors arriving from Pennsylvania or traveling along the Byway to attractions throughout the County. Studio d’ARC, an award-winning architecture firm based in Pittsburgh and Montreal, competed for and won the contract for the design study.
